In 2006, religious life in the Kyrgyz Republic changed under the pressure of the following factors:

1. There were more clandestine religious organizations than ever before; their impact on every social group became stronger, while the Hizb ut-Tahrir Party moved into open confrontation with the authorities.

2. The state became even more intolerant of religious extremism. The law-enforcement structures carried out several much more vigorous operations than before that identified and cut back destructive activities.

3. The secular authorities and the clergy continued their dialog and extended their cooperation. The official clergy continued to move away from the political processes.

4. The power struggle between the young Muslim elite, those earlier removed from high posts and the official clergy went on in the form of pickets and rallies.
