Introduction
In 2006, Azerbaijan’s foreign policy essentially did not change. The country’s main foreign policy priorities and geopolitical references were settlement of the protracted conflict with Armenia, development of regional energy and communication projects, and integration into the European and Euro-Atlantic structures.
The changes that did occur were related to the state’s overall consolidation, the stabilization of political power after the election turmoil of the previous year, and the unprecedented economic growth and corresponding increase in Azerbaijan’s political clout, hence more consistent and active efforts to resolve the problems facing the republic.
Even though there were no elections in 2006, the international community kept its attention riveted on Azerbaijan. This, unlike the previous year, was largely due to several macrofactors related mainly to the U.S.’s relations with Iran and the EU’s relations with Russia. The world’s major powers have also been showing a greater interest in the country as they form their foreign policy regarding the Caucasian-Caspian region.
Armenian-Azerbaijani Relations
